Wulingyuan’s Sandstone Peak Forests
See the same quartz-sandstone landscape from several scales: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain above the valleys, then Golden Whip Stream from the forest floor.
Built around three contrasting mountain days, this journey moves from the urban nightscape of the 72 Tujia Stilted Buildings into the UNESCO-listed Wulingyuan landscape and finishes on Tianmen Mountain. In Wulingyuan, narrow quartz-sandstone pillars rise above wooded ravines, streams and caves, giving Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Huangshi Village and Golden Whip Stream a shared geological character but very different viewpoints.
The pacing mixes elevated lookouts with gentler valley walking and two glass-height experiences. Day 2 combines the high viewpoints of Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain with the flatter Golden Whip Stream. Day 3 adds Huangshi Village, Ten-Mile Gallery and Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, while Day 4 closes with Tianmen Cave and the mountain glass walkway before the airport transfer.

Follow the itinerary’s flat streamside path beneath rock formations, with the possibility of seeing wild macaques along the route rather than treating sightings as guaranteed.
Cross the transparent-deck bridge at Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, an exposed high-level experience spanning 430 metres between the canyon sides.
Finish with the cable-car ascent, Tianmen Cave and the mountain glass walkway, keeping the final day focused before the airport transfer.
Arrive at Zhangjiajie West Station and transfer to the hotel near Wulingyuan Scenic Area. After check-in and a rest, have a Western-style light dinner, then visit the 72 Odd Buildings in the evening for a first encounter with Zhangjiajie’s local cultural scene.
Explore Yuanjiajie’s core viewpoints before continuing to Tianzi Mountain. After lunch, walk the flat Golden Whip Stream path, with opportunities to see macaques and unusual rock formations, then end the day with the scheduled folk-culture performance.
Take the cable car to Huangshi Village for broad mountain views, then ride the sightseeing train through Ten-Mile Gallery. In the afternoon, continue to Yuntiandu Glass Bridge and Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon before returning to the hotel.
Ride the cable car to Tianmen Mountain and visit Tianmen Cave and the glass walkway. A simple packed lunch is specified within the mountain area; continue to additional viewpoints before the tour ends with transfer to the airport.
The itinerary combines valley walking, stone steps, cable-car viewpoints and exposed glass-height experiences at the Grand Canyon and Tianmen Mountain.
The order of the final sightseeing day may change to match confirmed time slots and reservations.

The Golden Whip Stream section is flat. Other days combine viewpoints with cable-car or sightseeing-train access, but no total walking distance or step count is specified.
Official Hunan tourism guidance recommends April through October for Zhangjiajie, with April and October singled out as especially attractive months.
