This journey links the cultural landscape of Lanzhou and Zhangye with the remote interior of the Badain Jaran Desert. The route moves from the Yellow River region and Zhangye’s colourful sandstone formations into a landscape of large dunes, desert lakes and oases. Several days are spent travelling by local off-road vehicle inside the desert, where conditions require flexibility and careful attention to local guidance.

Arrive at Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport and transfer to your hotel. The first evening is kept relaxed, with optional time for a short walk along the Yellow River if arrival time allows.
Explore Lanzhou’s Yellow River culture in the morning, including Zhongshan Bridge and the riverside area. After lunch, take the high-speed train to Zhangye and transfer to your hotel near the Danxia area.
Visit Zhangye Qicai Danxia and admire the colorful sandstone landscape before driving toward Badain Jaran Town, the gateway to the desert.
Travel by local off-road vehicle into the desert. Explore lakes, oases and remote dunes, with possible sightings of wild camels and desert birds. Enjoy sunset among the sand mountains.
Continue deeper into Badain Jaran, visiting desert lakes and the hidden Tibetan Buddhist temple among the dunes. Optional camel riding or sandboarding can be arranged according to conditions.
Leave the deep desert through a different route, passing dunes, oases and lakes before reaching the Badain Lake area.
Spend time around Badain Lake before returning to Zhangye. Enjoy a comfortable hotel night after several days of desert exploration.
